The ceilings leaked. Raccoons had taken up residence in the building's upper levels. Work began to restore Iviswold to its former glory in 1999, when the school enlisted Historic Building Architects, a Trentonbased historical restoration firm, to oversee the project. "The first thing we did was to put it on the National Registry of Historic Places," said Annabelle RadcliffeTrenner, the firm's principal. "And then we began a slow, stepbystep restoration." All told, it took $6.5 million to restore the interior, and an additional $2.5 million for work on the exterior. Grants from the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Bergen County Division of Cultural a Historic Affairs covered $1.5 million of the costs; the rest came from fundraising and private donations. A few years after it was built, the house was featured in Scientific American as a marvel of American architecture, but after Ivison's death in 1903 it changed hands a number of times, eventually coming under the control of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The school used the building for administrative offices, subdividing its parlors into office space, until 1994. RadcliffeTrenner said that when restoration crews began work on the building, dropped ceilings gave way to grand arches and coats of paint hid original woodwork from plain sight. They reused anything salvageable they came across as they peeled back the house's layers, she said. "Where we could recycle, we did," she said. Original wainscoting and trim was uncovered, stripped of paint and given a new coat of wax or finish. Stained glass windows were delicately cleaned and put back into place. Some projects took longer than others. "We filled two trash cans with QTips to clean this," RadcliffeTrenner said, gesturing toward a quarterscale replica of the Cantoria Frieze, a renowned Italian artwork, which now sits above the building's converted chapel. It overlooks the chandelier, discovered inside a dropped ceiling. The building now serves a host of functions on the campus, housing admissions and other administrative offices and reception areas for oncampus events. More modern sections of the building serve as workspace and a dining area for students, open 24/7. Above the main hallway, a stained glass skylight, painted by Felician Sister Ann Therese Kelly, a former art professor, reminds visitors of the school's history as a Roman Catholic college. The mansion will be open soon for public tours, school officials said, and students will eventually be trained to interpret the building's history for visitors. "Everything they did, and the decisions they made were really good decisions," RadcliffeTrenner said of the restoration project. "They were fiscally responsible, but where they thought it could make a great visual impact, they spent the money, and where we could save, we saved." cheap uggs outlet are in the promotion now! cheap ugg boots outlet sale in uggs outlet store at a great price online .Thank you for your custom.Have a look just .ugg kids classic tall youth, ugg australia footwear, ugg boot retailers, ugg australia sheepskin boots.
